Even now that mankind has set foot on the moon, our planet’s satellite still exerts its fascination, a shape in the sky that, in its waxing and waning, affects not only the tides but also human spirits and actions. Might earth ever be under threat from the moon? Might its inhabitants be striving to communicate with us? Could it even be that the moon’s inhabitants — perhaps truly “lunatic” — might actually threaten to destroy us? That is the postulate of this story, a forgotten epic of truly Wellsian dimension. If you can take your thoughts back to a time when radio communication was still in its infancy and powered flight still a novelty, then this volume will set your imagination afire. Bohun Lynch (1884-1928) was a man of many parts. By profession a journalist specializing in the coverage of boxing contests, he was also a caricaturist of distinction, a novelist and an editor of short stories and letters. His seven novels include only one science fiction story, Menace from the Moon, here reprinted for the first time since its original publication in 1924. William A.S. Sarjeant, writer of the Introduction, is a Canadian geologist and palaeontologist, bibliographer, historian and folksinger. Under his middle names “Antony Swithin,” he has published four volumes of historical science fantasy, under the series title “The Perilous Quest for Lyonesse”; there are more to come. Two volumes of his writings on crime fiction are shortly to be published.
