Dr. John Thorndyke, the greatest scientific investigator ever to adorn the pages of detective fiction, was created by physician-naturalist-explorer Dr. R. Austin Freeman (1862-1943), described in the 1940’s as “the true and undoubted ‘parent’ of the scientific detective story ... and the living dean of that form — if not, indeed, of all detective story writers of whatever style or persuasion.” This dual biography of Freeman and Thorndyke was widely hailed when it first appeared in 1971: “A brilliant achievement...” — New York Times (Allen J. Hubin) “Invaluable ... thorough, scholarly, and very readable volume.” — Library Journal (Jon L. Breen) This second edition, in improved format, has been enlarged and updated. It adds new information about Freeman’s unusual private life and takes into account the many commentaries published in the last quarter century about the remarkable Thorndyke and the equally remarkable man who brought him to life. NORMAN DONALDSON, a chemist by profession and a lifelong admirer of Dr. Thorndyke, was born in Carlisle, England, in 1922. After service in the Royal Army Medical Corps in World War II he graduated with honours from St. Andrews University and in 1957 moved to America with his family. He was a senior editor with the American Chemical Society in Columbus, Ohio, when he retired to San Diego in 1985. He is the author of an important volume on the chemistry of naphthalene compounds. He and his late wife Betty began the series How Did They Die? in 1980. It details the medical histories and deaths of historical figures and modern celebrities from Tutankhamun and Henry VIII to Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman.
