Where's Gah-Ning happened like this. In May of 1990 I received a letter from a girl named Gah-Ning in Hearst, a little logging town, 90% French, about as far north as you can go by car in Ontario. Gah-Ning was 8 1/2. Her letter included a picture of a girl going up in a hot air balloon. When I looked up Hearst on the map I figured that she probably wanted to leave town by balloon, or any other way she could. Hearst is lost in the black spruce forest of northern Ontario, an isolated item on the long road that connects southern Ontario to the prairies. I made up a not very good story about taking a balloon ride and sent it off to her. I do that sort of thing fairly often and the kids usually never write back. Gah-Ning was an exception. Over the next year she wrote me 6 excellent letters. She turned out to be very literate for an 8 year old.
