As a young man Vincent Starrett dreamed of one day emulating one his literary heroes Richard Harding Davis, perhaps the greatest war correspondent of his day. But he struggled on the Chicago Daily News for nine years before the war cry was raised in 1914 by President Wilson and finally got his opportunity to fulfill his dream. Here is a partial record of those years in the form of newspaper dispatches from the front lines, dramatic short stories about the horrors of war, reminiscences and profiles of Richard Harding Davis and others he met in Vera Cruz, Mexico, and an unpublished 3-act play Starrett wrote in 1929 entitled War Correspondent. A reading feast for Starrett collectors about an unknown chapter in the life of a man who became one of our greatest bookmen, a poet of stature, a writer of mystery novels, and a legendary literary columnist for the Chicago Tribune. Vincent Starrett 1886-1974 One of the great literary historians and bookmen of our time, Starrett wrote more than 50 volumes of poetry, literary essays, bibliographies, mystery stories and detective novels. He was a crime reporter for the Chicago Daily News from 1906-17, and later a literary columnist for the Chicago Tribune, 1942-1968. He was a long-time member of the Mystery Writers of America; recipient of its first “Grand Master of Mystery” award (1957) and its president in 1961. He is best known for such books as his classic The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, Books alive, Bookman’s Holiday, and many others.
