This long awaited sequel to Bright Journey (1940) was published in 1958 and has become one of Derleth's most sought after historical novels. Based on the true life of Hercules Dousman, a man of remarkable capacity, a fur trader, railroad builder, and grain-shipper, he became the most influential figure of the Upper Mississippi Valley and the midwest's first Millionaire.

Secretly in love with Jane Rolette, the wife of King Joe Rolette, chief of the Astor fur brigades, Dousman marries her after King Joe's death. He builds a mansion for her called Villa Louis in Prairie du Chien (now one of the seven official landmarks of the wisconsin State Historical Society), and then a shadow falls across Dousman's happiness.

"Mr. Derleth writes with deep love of his home state... His is a regional novel of high order and excellence." - New York Times
