This second major new collection of stories in August Derleth's famed Sac Prairie saga focuses on the often dark and tragic side of the life in the midwest village that the author chronicled in almost a half hundred books over a period of 40 years. Return to Sac Prairie contrasts darkly with the humorous side of family life during the 1920's that we encountered in the recently published Country Matters which contained 35 exquisite episodes of Gus Elker and his neighbors, the Stolls. This new collection features the unpublished novel Linda Frayne (originally written in 1940) and 6 brooding novelettes about people returning to Sac Prairie to renew their lives; or to escape from the stifling atmosphere of small-town life. One of the great writers or our time, Derleth made Sac Prairie a literary landmark that surpasses Edgar Lee Masters' Spoon River and Sherwood Anderson's Winesburgh, Ohio. August Derleth was one of our most prolific writers. He wrote and edited more than 150 books. Although known primarily for his Sac Prairie Saga, Derleth also write many historical novels, biographies, histories of his native state of Wisconsin, and was one of the early pioneers of macabre, fantasy and science fiction. Return to Sac Prairie is part of the August Derleth Memorial Library, a series of books being edited by Peter Ruber, one of Derleth's former publishers, that will bring into print for the first time new collections of short stories and unpublished novels. In addition, selected Derleth classics will be reprinted in hardcover and trade paperback editions. An extensive selection of his writings will also become available in electronic editions on computer disks. Also available in hardcover $37.50
